Being somewhere or not (-에 있다/없다): Korean Grammar with Examples

How to use Being somewhere or not (-에 있다/없다)

1. Asking where an object is

어디에 있어요? means 'Where is it?'

열쇠가 어디에 있어요?
Where are the keys?

2. Describing where a person or thing is

Use a place noun + 에 있어요

고양이가 소파 밑에 있어요.
The cat is under the sofa.

에. -에 있다 states where something is: 책상 위에 있어요 means 'it is on the desk'.

2. Ask where an object is: 편의점이 어디___ 있어요?

Options: 가 · 에 · 에서 · 으로

에. 어디에 있어요? means 'Where is it?' The particle -에 marks the place when it goes with 있다.

3. Choose the correct sentence: 'My father is at home.'

Options: 아버지가 집에 계세요. · 아버지가 집에 없어요. · 아버지가 집에 있으세요. · 아버지가 집에서 있어요.

아버지가 집에 계세요.. 아버지 is someone senior, so "being somewhere" takes the honorific 계시다: 계세요. 있으세요 is only for "having", and 있다 takes 에, not 에서.

4. Choose the correct sentence: 'The cat is under the table.'

Options: 고양이가 책상 밑에 없어요. · 고양이가 책상 밑에 있어요. · 고양이가 책상 밑에서 있어요. · 고양이가 책상 위에 있어요.

고양이가 책상 밑에 있어요.. 밑에 있어요 means 'is underneath' and 위에 means 'on top'. Note it is -에 있어요, never -에서 있어요.

5. Choose the sentence that means: 'The restaurant is between the bank and the hospital.'

Options: 식당이 은행과 병원 사이가 있어요. · 식당이 은행과 병원 사이에 있어요. · 식당이 은행과 병원 사이에서 있어요. · 식당이 은행과 병원 앞에 있어요.

6. Fill in the right location particle: 화장실은 2층___ 있어요.

에. With 있다, the location takes 에, not 에서. 2층에 있어요 means "is on the second floor". The sentence means "The restroom is on the second floor."

7. Fill in the location word that matches: 'The wallet is in the bag.': 지갑은 가방 ___에 있어요.

안. 안 means "inside": 가방 안에 있어요 is "is in the bag". (위 is "on top", 밖 is "outside" and 옆 is "next to".)

12. Choose the correct sentence: 'There is nobody in the room.'

Options: 방에 아무도 안 있어요. · 방에 아무도 없어요. · 방에 아무도 있어요. · 방에서 아무도 없어요.

방에 아무도 없어요.. 아무도 always goes with a negative, and the negative of 있다 is 없다. The location takes 에. The sentence means "There is nobody in the room."

13. Choose the sentence that means: 'The restroom is to the right of the elevator.'

Options: 화장실은 엘리베이터 오른쪽에 있어요. · 화장실은 엘리베이터 오른쪽에서 있어요. · 화장실은 엘리베이터 오른쪽이 있어요. · 화장실은 엘리베이터 왼쪽에 있어요.
