Trying something out (-아/어 보다): Korean Grammar with Examples

Everything you need to use trying something out (-아/어 보다) correctly: the patterns, when to use them, examples with audio, common mistakes and exercises with answers.

Quick answer

-아/어 보다 expresses trying something out, or having experienced it - 'to try -ing'. Vowel harmony applies: ㅏ/ㅗ → 아 보다; other vowels → 어 보다; 하다 → 해 보다. Key patterns: Try + the action; Try + the action; Have or have not ever done it.

How to use Trying something out (-아/어 보다)

1. Suggesting someone try something

Use -아/어 보세요 to suggest that someone give it a try

이 음식을 한번 먹어 보세요.
Try this dish once.

2. Talking about experiences

Whether you have ever done it or not

김치찌개를 먹어 본 적이 없어요.
I have never had kimchi stew.

Key words

한번 (once, give it a go)-(아/어) 봐요 (give it a try)-(아/어) 봤어요 (have tried)-(아/어) 본 적이 있어요 (have ever done)-(아/어) 보세요 (please try - a request)

1. Fill in 'try eating': 먹다: 이 김치를 한번 먹어 ___.

Options: 바요 · 봐어요 · 봐요 · 요

봐요. 먹다 gives 먹어 봐요, 'give it a try'. 봐요 is the polite form of 보다.

2. Ask about experience: have you ever been to Japan?: 일본에 가 본 적이 ___?

Options: 봤어요 · 이에요 · 있어요 · 해요

있어요. -아/어 본 적이 있어요? asks 'have you ever...?': 가 본 적이 있어요? is 'have you ever been there?'

3. Choose the correct sentence: 'I tried on a hanbok.'

Options: 한복을 입고 봤어요. · 한복을 입아 봤어요. · 한복을 입어 봤어요. · 한복을 입어 있어요.

4. Choose the correct sentence: 'Try speaking Korean.'

Options: 한국 아이스커피를 마사 본 적이 있어요? · 한국 아이스커피를 마셔 보는 적이 있어요? · 한국 아이스커피를 마셔 본 적을 있어요? · 한국 아이스커피를 마셔 본 적이 있어요?

한국 아이스커피를 마셔 본 적이 있어요?. 마시다 gives 마셔 보다. Experience is verb + 아/어 본 적이 있어요? (적 takes 이, and the form is 본, not 보는). The sentence means "Have you ever had Korean iced coffee?"

6. Fill in the polite "try it" form (보다 + (으)세요): 이 옷을 한번 입어 ___.

Options: 보세요 · 보으세요 · 봐세요 · 있으세요

보세요. 보다 + 세요 gives 보세요. 입어 보세요 means "try it on". The sentence means "Try this outfit on."

7. Put 가다 + 아 보다: 제주도에 한번 ___ 보세요.
