Or (-거나): Korean Grammar with Examples

Everything you need to use or (-거나) correctly: the patterns, when to use them, examples with audio, common mistakes and exercises with answers.

Quick answer

-거나 joins two verbs or adjectives with the sense of 'or', offering a choice between two actions or states. It is only for verbs and adjectives; with nouns you use (이)나. Key patterns: Do A or B; Quality A or quality B; Noun or noun.

How to use Or (-거나)

1. Choosing between two actions

The speaker has not decided, or either one would do

쉬거나 운동을 해요.
I rest or do some exercise.

2. Choosing among several actions

Several options can be listed

걷거나 뛰거나 수영을 해요.
I walk, run or swim.

1. Join two alternative actions: 자다 / 쉬다: 집에서 자___ 쉬어요.

2. Fill in the connector for a choice of nouns: 커피 / 차: 커피___ 차를 마셔요.
