Everything you need to use future and intention (-(으)ㄹ 거예요) correctly: the patterns, when to use them, examples with audio, common mistakes and exercises with answers.
-(으)ㄹ 거예요 is the most common way of expressing the future or an intention in everyday Korean. It means 'will...', 'I plan to...', or it can be a guess. It comes from -(으)ㄹ 것 + 이에요, contracted to 거예요. Key patterns: Stem ending in a vowel + ㄹ 거예요; Stem ending in a consonant + 을 거예요; The stem already ends in ㄹ, so no second ㄹ is added.
| Form | Structure | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Vowel stem + ㄹ 거예요 | Stem ending in a vowel + ㄹ 거예요 | 가다 → 갈 거예요 to go → 'will go' |
| Consonant stem + 을 거예요 | Stem ending in a consonant + 을 거예요 | 먹다 → 먹을 거예요 to eat → 'will eat' |
| ㄹ stem → just add 거예요 | V stem(ㄹ) + 거예요 The stem already ends in ㄹ, so no second ㄹ is added | 살다 → 살 거예요 to live → 'will live' 살다: the stem 살 already ends in ㄹ, so 살 거예요, not 살을 거예요 |
