Quick answer

Actions completed before another action in the past. Affirmative: S + had + V3 (past participle); Negative: S + had + not + V3; Interrogative: Had + S + V3? Signal words: before, after, by the time, already, just, never ... before.

When to use the past perfect

1. An action before another past action

Describes an action that was completed before another one in the past.

When I arrived at the station, the train had already left.

2. Before / by + a time in the past

Used with 'by the time' for something that had happened before that point.

By the time we arrived, the movie had started.

3. Reported speech and conditionals

Used in reported speech and in the third conditional.

She said she had finished the report.
