The level most university applicants need, simulated in three timed sections: listening, reading and the sentence-ordering half of the writing paper.
The real HSK 4 exam has 100 questions: listening (45, about 30 minutes), reading (40, 40 minutes) and writing (15, 25 minutes), roughly 105 minutes in total. It is scored out of 300 and 180 passes. Engame's HSK 4 mock test has the full listening and reading sections plus the automatically marked half of writing, 10 sentence-ordering questions in 15 minutes. The five picture-sentence tasks are not included, so the score out of 300 is an estimate.

At HSK 4 you can discuss a fairly wide range of topics and talk with native speakers with reasonable fluency. The HSK 2.0 list doubles again to 1,200 words, and texts start to look like real articles rather than textbook dialogues.
This is the level many universities in China ask for when you apply to a bachelor's degree taught in Chinese, and it is often requested by employers who need everyday working Chinese. Requirements vary, so check the exact level with the university or employer.
The organisers' 2010 table maps HSK 4 to CEFR B2; teachers who compare it with European exams often see it closer to B1. Either way, it is the point where Chinese stops being a classroom subject and becomes a working language.
