Seventy timed questions covering the listening and reading sections of HSK 3, the first level where the paper drops pinyin and adds writing.
The real HSK 3 exam has 80 questions in three sections: listening (40 questions, about 35 minutes), reading (30 questions, 30 minutes) and writing (10 questions, 15 minutes), about 90 minutes in all. The total is 300 and the pass mark 180. Engame's HSK 3 mock test covers listening and reading only, so it reports an estimated score out of 200 with 120 as the pass mark: the same 60% threshold.

HSK 3 is the first intermediate level. The syllabus describes being able to communicate in Chinese at a basic level in daily, study and work situations, and to handle most of what comes up when travelling in China. The HSK 2.0 list has 600 words.
Two changes make it a real jump from HSK 2: the paper is printed in characters only, without pinyin, and there is a writing section. Grammar now includes complements of result and direction, 把 sentences, 越来越, 一边…一边… and 除了…以外.
In the organisers' 2010 table HSK 3 sits at CEFR B1, while many teachers place it between A2 and B1. It is a common requirement for short-term study programmes and a sensible goal before committing to the much larger HSK 4 vocabulary.
