Measure words (量词): Chinese Grammar with Examples

Quick answer

In Chinese a measure word must go between the number and the noun: 一本书 (one book). Each kind of noun takes its own measure word. Key patterns: One/Two/Three + Measure word + Noun; This/That + Measure word + Noun.

How to use Measure words

1. 个 is the all-purpose measure word

When you are unsure which measure word to use, 个 will do

三个人 / 一个苹果
Three people / One apple

2. Measure words for drinks

杯 for cups and glasses, 瓶 for bottles

请给我一杯水。
Please give me a glass of water.
